When Tennessee authorities botched an execution the condemned- Christa Pike, was taken to a hospital and then back to jail. With a failed effort at performing an execution right minded people would think that her death sentence should be commuted since it was carried out once already. Failed execution attempts should have automatic conversion to life sentences-else would be cruel and unusual.
The Army has scheduled a public execution by firing squad for Nidal Hasan- a former major in the Army and psychiatrist, for shooting thirteen people at Ft. Hood a few years ago. People like the Dutch prime minister have decried the public, broadcast execution on 3 Dec. 2026. They are the same people that fund the Ukraine war that has killed approximately a half million people. That contradiction is a mystery to me.
An execution by firing squad is fairly pain free; it is hard to miss a target a few yards away. The act is decisive, final and saves taxpayers the cost of a lifetime of incarceration payments; that for civilians at least reaches 100,000 dollars per year. That kind of money could buy a lot of food stamps for numerous poor citizens.
Thou shalt not kill is one of the ten commandments. If one is going to execute serial murderers the act probably should be televised rather than kept secretly in the shadows like so much political perfidy. Maybe concealing reality is preferable for societies that run vast budget deficits. It would be better if no one killed anyone obviously. Since people continue to kill, a satisfactory moderation might be for those sentenced to death to be given the chance to have their sentences commuted to life if some go fund me campaign will pay the public cost of their interminable incarceration- even the Dutch Prime Minister could afford that.
