A Note on Einstein's Lambda Force
J.D. Barrow explains in his 'The Book of Nothing' some facts and history of Einstein's development of the Lambda force in the context of developing the general theory of relativity (on page 180). He had already explained that {geometry} = {distribution of mass and energy} in the universe as regards the shape of space as a fundamentally theory before upgrades. Because Einstein wanted to make his theory fit nicely with Newton's gravitational theory he tested it with Newton's values and found that with Newton's inverse square law plugged in his simple universal model couldn't form an unchanging universe. So he invented a new force with an effect opposite to Gravity that he named Lambda to balance out the values of the equation so the universe could have a steady state (he didn't know the Universe is expanding).
Barrow writes that the Lambda force was postulated to increase with distance. I haven't read that anyplace else as simple said and find it remarkable. I had thought that the force increased with time accelerating the expansion of the Universe because of the reduction of the masking effect of gravity when mass was more broadly distributed in smaller bits of mass.

I have wondered occasionally if Mexico will develop the geothermal energy potential of the volcanicly active Mt. Popocatepetl as part of a trans-continental Pacific to Gulf of Mexico pipeline siphon fresh water making system.

Popocatepetl's geothermal source would provide a lot of fresh water to condense for human drinking and agricultural use. The water removed from that incoming up from the Pacific would need to have some of the its lost flow power in the downhill compensated for with electrical energy made with the heat to help pump it uphill.
The heat energy input from volcanic vents to a generator facility perhaps through liquid sodium filled sealed pipes (just guessing) could add the energy needed to steam power generators, produce condensable water vapor, collect salt and replace the lost water volume on the downhill side of the flow needed to keep the water continue to flow uphill.
The Gulf of Mexico has a lower sea level in comparison to the Pacific-maybe because of the spin direction of the world the water piles up in Acapulco and environs. Natural Resource Use/Free Enterprise Primer
The government may sell natural resources even if the private sector has resources of the same kind. Gold from Ft. Knox sold after a federal budget default may deflate gold prices privately held. Oil from the strategic oil reserve was sold intentionally to drive down fuel price by increasing supply-I was against that incidentally.
I am writing about natural gas-not oil. There is a huge difference.
Making petroleum from oil involves quite a lot more processing than natural gas that burns right from the tap. The cost of building a bullet pipeline from the North Slope to Anchorage would be seven billion dollars, and half of the gas would be sold offshore perhaps and it might be necessary to build a new LNG plant and deepwater supertanker loaf facility, yet the people could buy cheaper natural gas with intellligent planning for a century. The state can sell its resource directly to the people and on the spot market to shippers.
Alaska has already had a 35 year relationship get a royalty from oil from the slope they let private corporations extract and ship out of state. Alaska has very high gasoline prices and is running out of oil supply-this is all very bad resource management policy including new offshore oil drilling and the potential for environmentally devastating oil spills in the future.

About Natural Resources And Free Enterprise
It might be useful to revisit a few of the basic practical concepts of free enterprise in this era where some Americans it means to get a paycheck from Wal-Mart or Exxon-Mobil. Adam Smith had practical ideas that resources and liberty are best used by everyone if kept free from big business bullies in corporations, gangs or government.

Natural resources of a democratic society originally belong to the people (though some might say that the people belong to the resources). Air, land, water, and natural gas in abundance on public lands fall under the jurisdiction of public governance.
Unfenced frontiers given to settlers for work and making corner markers without onerous auctions that just the rich would win, rivers free flowing for all boaters and to fill urban water taps because the resource was not sold to Global Water Corporation Unlimited-this conservation of public natural resources requires environmental security defense and resource management to assure that the citizens might have the best opportunity for the use of the resource to freely construct their own valued prizes of leisure, of business travel, of energy etc. without permission from or payment to the Imperial Corporate Power organization.
It would be wrong and a betrayal of public trust for a government to auction off those resources en mass to the highest bidder in effect giving all of the chips at a discounted value to the rich.
Natural wilderness resources of the Americas as they remain will best be conserved. If natural resources are used egalitarian access to provide equal opportunity for citizen free enterprise is of higher social value than allowing an exclusive, global corporate ownership through idiot auction to the rich.
If the resource is non-renewable such as natural gas in Alaska then the state should provide access to the resource on public demand that will reinforce to the most egalitarian citizen resource access.
Free enterprise of a thousand souls generally creates the better odds for creative invention than when a thousand souls work for one rich dude. Allowing natural resources to be controlled by extreme limited access private interests endangers the political liberty of the many.
Free enterprise is a simple affair. One simply improves one's life with available resources. The more resources available to the public the more opportunities a soul has to get heat in winter, grow food in summer, have water to drink and so forth. it is important that public resources be protected and defended from destructive large scale exploitation to keep the resource fund alive.
Free enterprise does not require sale of merchandise. Sale of assets is a secondary activity from the store of personal property one has built up-usually the goods are exchanged for something one wants and does not have or a cash proxy.
The advantage of free trade is best found in an environment of abundant natural resources in which an individual may best find useful articles and materials to manufacture articles that would meet needs not answered by unmanufactured articles.
When cultures lose sight of common sense foundations for free trade and mistake purely abstract trading circumstances and practices that gain advantage for individuals positioned to exploit corporations to lever social and physical environments the free enterprise interests of the many and well being of democracy is reduced.

The state can sell its resource directly to the people and on the spot market to shippers.
Alaska has already had a 35 year relationship get a royalty from oil from the slope they let private corporations extract and ship out of state. Alaska has very high gasoline prices and is running out of oil supply-this is all very bad resource management policy including new offshore oil drilling and the potential for environmentally devastating oil spills in the future.

It might be useful to revisit a few of the basic practical concepts of free enterprise in this era where some Americans it means to get a paycheck from Wal-Mart or Exxon-Mobil. Unfenced frontiers given to settlers for work and making corner markers without onerous auctions that just the rich would win, rivers free flowing for all boaters and to fill urban water taps because the resource was not sold to Global Water Corporation Unlimited-this conservation of public natural resources requires environmental security defense and resource management to assure that the citizens might have the best opportunity for the use of the resource to freely construct their own valued prizes of leisure, of business travel, of energy etc. without permission from or payment to the Imperial Corporate Power organization.
It would be wrong and a betrayal of public trust for a government to auction off those resources en mass to the highest bidder in effect giving all of the chips at a discounted value to the rich.
Natural wilderness resources of the Americas as they remain will best be conserved. If natural resources are used egalitarian access to provide equal opportunity for citizen free enterprise is of higher social value than allowing an exclusive, global corporate ownership through idiot auction to the rich.
If the resource is non-renewable such as natural gas in Alaska then the state should provide access to the resource on public demand that will reinforce to the most egalitarian citizen resource access.
Free enterprise of a thousand souls generally creates the better odds for creative invention than when a thousand souls work for one rich dude. Allowing natural resources to be controlled by extreme limited access private interests endangers the political liberty of the many.
Free enterprise is a simple affair. One simply improves one's life with available resources. The more resources available to the public the more opportunities a soul has to get heat in winter, grow food in summer, have water to drink and so forth. it is important that public resources be protected and defended from destructive large scale exploitation to keep the resource fund alive.
Free enterprise does not require sale of merchandise. Sale of assets is a secondary activity from the store of personal property one has built up-usually the goods are exchanged for something one wants and does not have or a cash proxy.
The advantage of free trade is best found in an environment of abundant natural resources in which an individual may best find useful articles and materials to manufacture articles that would meet needs not answered by unmanufactured articles.
When cultures lose sight of common sense foundations for free trade and mistake purely abstract trading circumstances and practices that gain advantage for individuals positioned to exploit corporations to lever social and physical environments the free enterprise interests of the many and well being of democracy is reduced.

Aristotle and Theological Controversy Over Nothingness
I hadn't any idea before reading J.D. Barrow's 'The Book of Nothing' of the historically volatile issues surrounding the controversial question of could a vacuum exist or not-who would have thought?
Evidently the question of the existence or non-existence of a vacuum-of real empty space such as today one might regard the mass of the Universe to exist in, has drawn along not only scientific opinions to opposing sides but theological sides as well.
Aristotle seems to have believed that empty space could not really exist and locate such as might beyond the Universe surrounding it in a meta-universal cosmic void. Fair enough. Theologians over time were silly enough to be drawn into the issue believing that nothing could not exist because it might imply some sort of inability of God to control something (or nothing). That is, nothing could not really exist as that would mean that there was some part of the creation called nothingness beyond the power of God. Theologians believed that nothing is not beyond the power of God (or maybe that describes atheists today better), or rephrased, that everything including nothing is within the power of God. Barrow points out that word games and poems also evolved around the theories of nothing.
It is the scientific dialectic involving research into vacuums and barometric pressure that stimulated science and philosophical speculation too. Torricelli, Pascal and Descartes were at time advocates of different paradigms, yet material researches led to inferences about the nature of the environment for themselves with a decrease in theological conformity in an Aristotelian paradigm.
Does a true vacuum exist with nothing in it? Perhaps not in this Universe with its emergence of virtual particles, passage of neutrinos and a pervasive gravity field.
Perhaps the apparent vacuum in 3 dimensions of space is suffused with six extra, smaller dimensions and a field of quantum energy as strings or brane fields. Goodness, the appearance of a vacuum may again be a four dimensional interpretation in human cognitive context of the Universe's distribution of power.
Without air mice and men perish in a vacuum. Without caloric action mass dies down toward the absolute zero direction eventually. Maybe the low state of comparative pressure and absence of mass comparatively provides a pragmatic rather than a philosophical vacuum yet those are the sorts of things one needs for practical knowledge of the 'weather' conditions of the Universe.
A James Webb space telescope may provide more answers to questions about the deep structure of the Universe so we don't need to rely on just scientific sectarianism as a kind of post-Aristotelian scientology for making intuitive judgments about the 'weather' within and without the Universe.
Today, with political progress in Washington D.C., if one feels strongly pro or con on theological or scientological opinions of the void, space-time unification, or empty space one may freely march to support or protest nothing or something about nothing without fear of political or economic reprisal-especially if unemployed. For now, nothing is safe for moral conservatives. The radical chic has moved on to other areas such as biology, atheism, abortion, homosexuality and concentrating wealth as its extremist global agenda.

This book will not inform you that the Mayan word for 'day' was 'kin' or explain Hubble's Law, what it will do is bring the reader to a vista of a worldview occluded for many today, and of a man who met the resurrected Christ -a view across the greatly interesting expanse of the life of the Apostle of Jesus Christ. This perspective is one we may lack even with decades of reading the New Testament casually, and even with faith.
Gary Wills published this book in 2006. Paul's confirmed letters-seven of the thirteen in the New Testament, were sent to the ekklesia (churches) within 20 years of the crucifixion of The Lord Jesus Christ. They are the first published works of the New Testament preceding even the books of the gospel by decades. Gary Will's book illuminates ideas about the circumstances in which the letters were written, and necessarily of the life of Paul. That is an excellent investment of time and thought for the faithful and even for those cultured despisers of belief.
If the New Testament was written by men, and if the books are what remain of fragments of more works, of historical captures of the oral history nature of the culture, Biblical scholarship investigating the order, manner and composition of that writing-not simply considerations and comparisons of books selected for inclusion in the new Testament and those left out, we may find the knowledge increases our faith in the grace of God allowing mortal man to experience some of the light of the revelation of God as Jesus Christ-the Messiah and convey it to future generations through the experience and writing of mortal man.
Paul encountered Jesus Christ personally-perhaps several times, in his resurrected, glorified body. His own descriptions differ from those recorded in the Book of the Acts. The Book of Acts was written perhaps quite a bit after Paul's letters and may be a historical capture of knowledge of events 'as told by' for posterity.

Levi Aron & The Bloody Crime in N.Y.'s Jewish Community
One would not want to think that the average New Yorker has such a social conditioning toward homicide that someone asking for directions at random might become a victim of a killer. That is one of the reasons why this very unusual (I hope) crime by Levi Aron-a Jew with an obviously symbolicly important name requires some thought.

An Alaska Republican Government Against Free Enterpise?
Alaska's Republican dominated state legislature has a Republican Governor now to match up with control over state politics. On moral issues the state Republicans may be more conservative than democrats, yet on free enterprise they seem to be less innovative than Vladimir Lenin.
The state Republican government over the long run has created a reliance upon major international oil and gas producers for funding the state government. Funding the state government and sharing some of those oil and gas royalties with municipal governments often times seems to be the Republican idea of free enterprise in the state.
The present gas pipeline through Canada from Alaska's North Slope is the present golden idol goal for funding the stae Republican dominated government. They seek to have an Exxon partnered firm construct a pipeline to help get rid of the state's valuable fossil fuel remnants at low cost to global corporations; that is the Republican concept of free enterprise in Alaska-and the best use of public natural resources.

The idea of conserving those oil and gas fields on state lands for use in the state of Alaska the next 300 years doesn't appear on the Republican radar screen at all. If a gas field developer were hired to drill and build a pipeline to Anchorage and create retail natural gas sales stations along the way perhaps for 30% of the value of the profit the people of Alaska would have very low energy prices and have a better free enterprise prospect than states or many nations with higher energy prices.
It is o.k. for the state to sell it public natural resources directly to the public. An Exxon or BP is no more a private interest ort entitled to cheap energy than the Alaska citizen that wants cheap propane to heat coffee to sell at his coffee drive thru. Cheap energy prices in one area can attract businesses that can pay tax revenues if needed to fund state government services that actually are needed.
Alaska's Government could set the retail price of natural gas sold at its partnered sales outlets. Natural gas sold at 50 cents per gallon with a stable supply would let Alaskans convert their gas guzzlers to burn 50 cents a gallon propane if they wanted too. They can also use propane in fuel cells (I believe) and have cheap heating energy for homes, businesses and greenhouses.
Obviously global warming and decay of the ecosphere are vitally important issues to consider in government today. A stable energy supply for even one state would allow government to address better ecological zoning laws development and policies that would encourage high insulation efficeincy in houses, prevention of leakage of heat outdoors, and a balanced state budget with liberty, justice and free enterprise jobs for all.

President Obama Line Item Veto Showdown on Federal Budget Debt Limit
With the approaching federal spending debt limit the President might start to develop alternate plans A through D on what to cut from the federal budget . Now is the time to round up his herd for the showdown at the o.k. veto-cuttin corral.
For a Ronald Reagan kind of guy with fast draw tendencies on line item veto'ing these are some of the things that might drop at high noon August 2nd, 2011; reduce military wages 50% (there is a year waiting list for enlistment and a 9.2% unemployment rate), to limit social security payments at total income for any individual of less than $18,000 annually from all sources, to withdraw all except 35,000 troops from Afghanistan-squaring aware the northern alliance and other persecuted non-Sunni citizens in defensible areas and letting the fledgling Afghan government fly free, cutting the Marines down to 50,000 and creating a new SF BOP force of 50,000 special forces rapid deployment specialists...the opportunities for specialized line item quality budget cutting and restructuring by a bold creative President is approaching August 2nd.
I am not certain if President Obama has the legal power to fund portions of programs and to redesign others. Getting more bang for the buck out of the present federal budget should be easy enough. The President must have good ideas and be chomping at the bit to get started on cutting and slashing federal spending his political opponents prefer and that are dumb so long as he increases employment and national security.

Senator McConnell's strange idea that the President should set the federal debt limit can have some unintended consequences. The idea seems to have some support though.
It is a strange idea; if the President is given that degree of federal spending control it seems a move toward oligarchy or an imperial Presidency.
Federal spending is supposed to be the role of the Congress. It votes to give the President a certain amount of money for particular works and that all he gets. Sen. McConnel would change that.
With the new Imperial Presidency a future President could decide to spend whatever he likes so long as his party in Congress comprises at last a third of the members in order to prevent a veto.
Some M.B.A. papered President might decide to send a trillion dollars to a numbered Cayman Islands account and then resign to make way for new people and change while he goes into retirement in the Cayman Islands. A President might wage a war through foreign mercenaries or support for proxie militaries and fund it without concern of Congressionally rude war funding disruption.

On the Extracosmic Void
Reading a book on the void of space and the topic of nothing brings me to consider the topic that Aristotle amongst other considered so long ago. Not that I will do so as well or completely-just a few ideas to write down.
Is it an extracosmic void with neutral pressure rather than a negative vacuum pressure that serves to let the positive pressure of the matter of the Universe expand at increasing pace? Does the extracosmic void beyond the edge of the universe (or an infinite garden of universes connected in some way) continue on without boundaries forever? That idea of pure nothingness is one of the most challenging ideas of all to ponder.
I think it a better idea to consider God as creating matter, energy and nothing as well within his own field of being. It seems more reasonable for me to think that God actually occupies all space infinitely and creates the space-time and voids for universes as willed rather than to believe that God exists separately from an independent primordial nothingness into which he ordered a Universe to exist.
In the beginning the deep was without form and void-yet it was God's form and void existing like a blank canvas on which to fill in the 4 dimensional art of The Creation.
Albert Camus expressed one perspective of the existential paradox in his book 'The Stranger'. At one point in the story the stranger was on a beach alone and philosophically experienced nausea that anything existed at all-it is a difficult thing to think about deeply.
Sartre may have taken that literary experience as the title of his first philosophical fiction book 'Nausea'. As an associate professor of philosophy in La Havre before the 2nd world war he had some time to write. He did not write about God in generally as a theological concept of everything existing-possibly a more difficult realization even than Camus', instead he wrote about subjective experience of being in particular; a common philosophical approach instead of a theoretical speculation with an Aquinian or metaphysical style. We too may leave off from the difficult, even mystical contemplation of God as the sole existing reality transcendently and consider the more local subject of this particular universe, potential infinite universes and any causality we might think of regarding physics and empty space.
If there is an infinite number of Universes it isn't impossible that they all comprise some kind of a structure. As quarks, sub-atomic particles, atoms, elements, dust, planets, stars and galaxies exist, and as the observable universe exists, the entire universe may exist as a part of a larger structure. It may function like a cell in a body of a far more complex being...or not. Even so it is not necessary that an infinite number of universes existing in a disordered matrix of accidental and phenomenal causality. There may be quite a number of physical channels of communication structured meta-universally. The neutral void may continually affect the actualizing history of those compositions of mass.

The New Normal/An Era of Nothingness
NPR has described the high state of unemployment and lackluster economic growth as 'the new normal'. I believe that technically it might better be called the new b.s.
Lucretius for one amongst middle aged investigators considered the formation of a vacuum. Aristotle before had inferred attributes of a theoretical vacuum space and of pure nothingness-he rejected its existence. I shall regard it a little more even so.
A zero-growth ecologically sustainable economy cold still have full employment. The present problem is that economic growth and national productivity is unrelated to the employment rate directly. Instead the increased profits just go to concentrated wealth management and the upper class while the government apologists for 'the new normal' of ordinary citizens being screwed by the corporate world fail to consider the infinite subtlety and beauty of constructivist economic systems and rules for free enterprise democracy that allow a myriad of formations of prosperous cultural versions of a democratic society to potentially exist.
Ideas about nothing are as challenging as ideas about things potential yet not actual. We tend to regard the concept of an empty universe and a vacuum as one with three dimensions if it did exist before any Universe ever did. It is more difficult to imagine a vacuum or empty universe without any dimensions at all.
In fact the idea of a primordial vacuum could be wrong. A vacuum has negative pressure in comparison to something else with positive pressure or mass. So before any universe ever existed, before the first virtual particle ever oozed out of nothingness, the vacuum with its unbounded infinite existence must have had neutral pressure (no pressure). The emergence of even one single dimensional virtual particle would have exerted a pejorative negative pressure upon the entire neutral vacuum universe forever increasing collaterally with the appearance of more virtual string-particles. That concatenated pejorative positive pressure on the neutral vacuum might account for the acelleration of the Universe into the extra-cosmic vacuum noticed since about 1999.
A steady-state economy can be regarded as a full employment economy with sustainable energy input that does no harm to the ecospheric viability of a continent or world. Negative internal pressure of an economy creates high unemployment, poverty and pathos. Positive external pressure degrades and destroys the viability of an an ecosphere and non-sustainable accelerates thermodynamic conversion of natural resources from a low to high entropy condition.
It is possible to have an economy that sucks with high unemployment and simultaneously concentrates wealth while devastating the ecosphere. A health steady state economy has neither of those features. It perennially increases the quality of life for all its citizens with improvements in culture and in optimizing use of renewable resources.
