Shouldn't the politicians be organizing the construction of geothermal power units in Juneau and Wrangell to produce electricity from saltwater and make freshwater (especially at Wrangell)? If the cities made their own electricity they could save a lot annually and for Juneau, finally build an electric light rail down Egan Drive and old glacier hwy to the Valley.

As for the terrible Canadian destruction of fishing quality in Alaskan Rivers that continue into Canada- what realistically can be done with such people that value metal extraction over water and wilderness quality?

Time published a chart of the history of mass killings in the United States the past 37 years. Notably, Democrat President Clinton and Obama were drivers for increasing mass shootings in the U.S.A.

Before President Clinton mass shooting numbers were small- usually in the single digits. During the last year of the Clinton administration that number jumped an order of magnitude to 57. President G,W. Bush saw a rapid decrease in mass shootings back to the traditional single digits- and then President Obama took office.

President Obama had several years with large numbers of mass killings; more than 50. His final year in office had 71 fatalities from mass shootings. President Trump has had to grapple with that number himself. That number is about the new normal, except for the year of the Las Vegas shooting when 117 people died under the gun.

Plainly the Congress needs to take action to stop the mass shootings. More people die in one day from automobile accidents that a few years of mass shootings, and something should be done about that too. Congress should build the wall, keep new illegal migrants out and compel law abiding migrants only to be the rule. Society need have a chance to stabilize, eliminate poverty and increase education and ecospheric health.

Drunk drivers continue to slaughter innocent Americans, yet Democrats haven't sought to ban cars. Why not more outrage about the mass casualties that do occur now and then?

With fewer than 100 people killed from mass shootings annually as the new normal for the U.S.A., the risk of disarming citizens taking that path that leads to the vulnerability of 320 million people instead of 100 is a greater danger. Complete arms control has been the normal state of affairs for dictatorships such as exists in communist countries and socialist dictatorships such as that of NAZI Germany.

About 1000 people are killed every day in U.S. automobile accidents. Those deaths are preventable with state of the art, innovative mass transit networks, yet for convenience people choose not to care. Farley Mowatt wrote a book about the Irish discovering America before the Vikings- who basically followed them across the North Atlantic as predators. The book was named; ‘The Farfarers- Before the Norse’.

Just Search for the Spirit, unlike Mowatt’s book, is primarily science fiction- combining some historically valid theory with time travel and politics.

The Sports of Chess and Crossword Puzzles

Names and claims in a somewhat decadent era creep through proprietary annexation to activities that upgrade the prestige of expropriators. Seventy-five years ago in the United States professions and professional activity referred generally to physicians, lawyers, teachers and those occupations with education wherein some professing of learning could be said to happen. Today that meaning is lost and one is a professional janitor, pro carpet installer, pro painter, telemarketer-politician (reading a computer script), burger-flipper at Burger King, pro athlete or anything else done for pay.

A sport might be said to be, for example, Afghan horseback football with a goat as the ball. Long ago quasi-rugby polo might have been a good training exercise for cavalrymen, while chess was a war game that modeled deployment and movement of pieces. In a decadent era where people live inside urban boxes with television and Internet and do not train as warriors for cavalry charges in the Rocky Mountains or wherever, arguments about the question of chess being a sport or a game arise instead. 

Trying to fit new activities into old name categories tends to corrupt the initial meaning of the category.  The appearance of new human activity such as automobile racing requires some description and classification so old, existing categories are used. A decision is made that the new activity is this or that. 

Automobile racing is a sport.Sport formerly was just a human activity, then machines were invented that allowed machine-augmented sport. Perhaps new names should be made to describe new activities- such as machine-sports or cyborg sports. What about machine-augmented leg-boots that permit humans to run a marathon is twenty minutes? Isn’t that a sport, yet not just a human sport?

And what of computer coding-isn’t it also a sport like chess? Or is that simply a profession in C+?

The Alaska Marine Highway (Ferry) Strike is Like Extortion of Organized Crime

The strike shows the philosophical problem with allowing labor unions into critical positions in government operations acting as organized crime. Unions originally were supposed to band together poor, underpaid workers against powerful private businesses and corporations for a living wage. In the Ferry worker's strike the union is attacking the small businesses and ordinary citizens that use the marine highway from a leveraged position operating a critical government marine highway. The extortion of the unions to leverage more money during the height of the summer work and travel/sales season and while the government is in the midst of a severe financial crisis is cause enough to get rid of the union from any critical government operations position that will directly, immediately harm the general public if it strikes.
